Vieux Carré

Cognac and rye built over ice with a little Bénédictine, lime concentrate and both Peychaud's and Angostura bitters, finished with a twist of lemon peel. Warm, herbal and quietly citrusy, a fine nightcap.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups ice
  • 1½ fl oz cognac
  • ½ fl oz rye whiskey
  • ⅛ oz Bénédictine
  • 1 dash Peychaud's bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 2 tbsp lime concentrate
  • 1 (2-inch) piece lemon peel, to garnish
  • 2–3 Richberry halves

How to Make It

  1. Build

Fill a short glass with the ice. Pour in the cognac, rye, Bénédictine and lime concentrate.

  2. Add the bitters

Add a dash each of Peychaud's and Angostura bitters and stir briefly.

  3. Garnish

Twist the lemon peel over the drink and drop it in.

  4. Add the Richberry twist

Just before your first sip, chew 2–3 Richberry halves gently and let them linger for about 30 seconds. Discard any pit, then taste how the sour notes turn sweet.

Richberry changes the taste, not the drink: a cocktail may taste softer, but it is just as strong. Please enjoy it responsibly.

Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)

Strong black tea gives the mocktail the tannic backbone the cognac and rye would.
