Sicilian Blood Orange Salad

A simple Sicilian-style salad of blood orange pieces, green onion, good olive oil and black pepper, served well chilled. The oranges and a splash of lemon give it a bright, sour edge that Richberry turns sweet for a while.

Wooden board of peeled orange slices with curved red onion pieces, cracked black pepper and mint
Juicy. Peppery. Refreshing.

Ingredients

  • 6 blood oranges peeled and segmented
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ cup green onions, sliced
  • Extra virgin olive oil to drizzle
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste

How to make it

  1. Prepare the oranges

Cut each blood orange segment in half, pick out any seeds and put the pieces in a medium bowl.

  2. Add the onions

Add the green onions and toss gently to combine.

  3. Dress and chill

Sprinkle over the lemon juice, drizzle with just enough olive oil to coat, season lightly with pepper and chill until you're ready to serve.

The Richberry difference

A naturally brighter taste

Miraculin, the protein in the miracle berry, can make sour flavours taste sweeter for a while. The food itself stays the same; only your taste changes.

Tip

Out of season? Navel oranges work well too, and a mix of both looks lovely.

Serve with

Grilled fish or chicken, or olives and crusty bread as a starter.

Richberry tip

Just before you eat, chew 1–2 halves gently and let them linger for about 30 seconds. Discard any pit.
