Mint Julep

Spearmint, bourbon and a squeeze of lime, stirred over crushed ice until the cup frosts, then crowned with a big bouquet of mint. Cold, fragrant and unhurried, it suits a warm day outdoors.

Ingredients

  • 8–10 spearmint leaves
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 cups crushed ice
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • a handful of mint sprigs, to garnish
  • 2–3 Richberry halves

How to Make It

  1. Bruise the mint

Clap a few mint leaves between your hands to release their oils, rub them round the inside of a julep cup or tumbler and drop them in. Repeat with the rest, then press them lightly with a muddler or spoon.

  2. Stir over ice

Half-fill the cup with crushed ice, add the bourbon and lime juice and stir until the outside of the cup frosts.

  3. Top and garnish

Pack in more crushed ice, stir gently and finish with a generous bunch of mint sprigs.

  4. Add the Richberry twist

Just before your first sip, chew 2–3 Richberry halves gently and let them linger for about 30 seconds. Discard any pit, then taste how the sour notes turn sweet.

Richberry changes the taste, not the drink: a cocktail may taste softer, but it is just as strong. Please enjoy it responsibly.

Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)

Build it the same way with cold black tea in place of the bourbon; the mint and crushed ice do the rest.
